What Do You Think?
Philippians 4:8 -Finally brothers, whatever is true, what ever is noble, what ever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable...if anything is excellent or praiseworthy...think about such things.
Our thoughts can get us in trouble. They are a stomping ground for Satan. When we allow our thinking to go to a place of negativity, let's face it, it affects our whole being. We feel anxious, grumpy, fearful, depressed, and our perspective usually gets blown way out of proportion. If this is where we let our thoughts dwell it's very difficult to feel good inside and everything suffers, especially our relationship with God and others.
Our thoughts can also have the reverse effect when we choose to think about good things and reject those that bring us down. Thinking about what is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy will bring us peace and calm to our spirits. It lifts us up, and Satan has no place to get into our lives.(This really makes him mad)
I think the key to thinking well comes from how we see God in our day to day situations. If He is in everything we do and we consult Him and think how He would handle things, it helps us to see more clearly. We also have to guard our thought life, be vigilant about what we take in. We have the choice to accept or reject the things we hear, think, and see in any given moment.
So if we find ourselves in that downward spiral of negative thinking...try this...catch ourselves, acknowledge our thoughts are going towards the negative and consciously make a choice to think on the things that Paul mentions. If we think long and hard enough and ask Gods help we will succeed in changing our thought patterns and therefore closing the door on Satan's influence in our lives. If we do this God promises us peace(that's in vs. 9)
Thought Life
Let us set our thoughts on what's noble and true
Lovely and pure and admirable too.
Things that are pure, praiseworthy,and right
On these things we shall set our sights.
Reject those thoughts that bring us down
preventing Satan from coming round.
Then the peace of God will reign supreme,
And our hearts and minds He will redeem.
